Great Allegheny Passage - June 23 - 27, 2013

Tuesday was the layover day in Confluence. People went rafting, hiking, and toured the Frank Lloyd Wright houses. I was planning to do the road ride on Wednesday but wanted to complete the trail as well. So I rode out and back from both ends to Rockwood. This is little shed in Rockwood had a cell phone amplifier. I was able to call and talk with Linda a little.

All week, I was under the impression that this little girl was reserved. As we peddled up out of Frostburg, I mentioned that here jersey didn't match her helmet (usually they did match). She talked for a while about her sister smelly socks in the laundry bag and other reasons for the miss-match. I realized that she is not reserved or shy in any way.
This is Bob. Apparently, he has been coming for many years. I enjoyed riding with him and having lunch at the Firefly Grill.

The ride over the peak of Mt. Davis was almost cancelled due to lack of interest. Paul Fogel, Maralyn, Mark, Jack, Amir, and I made the climb. After resting a little, I rode back to Rockwood to finish the rail trail. In all, I rode 53 miles and climbed over 3000 feet in one day. What a great group of riders.
Amir rode his Gary Fisher mountain bike for the climb. Wow. |
The tunnels were pretty amazing. Unfortunately, we had a couple of injuries. One lady fell. Another gentleman caught the handrail chain with his handlebar and went down. I didn't know what had happened, but as I entered the tunnel, I saw the ambulance at the other end. I stayed at the entrance to warn on coming riders to be aware and slow down.

The last day was mostly downhill from Frostburg to Cumberland. I got to ride the steepest part of the trail in the heaviest part of the downpour. I was riding 20 mph in the ripping rain. Pretty cool. Everyone was completely soaked and the mud stains were pretty impressive.
