Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort.
In late October, 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City and New Jersey. This disaster is wide spread and it will take many years to recover. The students of Lehighton High School have stepped up to do their part. On three weekends in November and December, 17 students have given their Saturday to travel to Coney Island. They have partnered with Poured-out ministries to help residents dig out after the storm. Some helped by tearing out wet dry wall and insulation. Others removed hardwood and laminate flooring. A few have become experts at crawling under houses to drag out wet insulation, trash, and up-heaved concrete. All have been a blessing to many residents of Coney Island. Several from the local community and also from Bethany Wesleyan Church were also able to serve in Coney Island. Some of the more experienced carpenters have started installing new insulation and drywall. Still another team was able to help by sorting donated materials and supplies at Hope NYC church. This church is housed in a trucking warehouse and serves as a distribution point and a home for teams that come for an extended stay. A big "Thank You" to all that gave! |
This video was shown at a board meeting that I was unable to attend.

My first trip with Bethany Wesleyan church. I had a chance to meet Steve from Poured-out Ministries. This contact allowed me to bring more trips.
We worked hard each day. I really enjoyed working side by side with students, parents, and friends from church. It was an eye opening experience for many. The trash was piled high in the streets. I was extremely impressed with the endurance of the teams.

Mucking out crawl spaces was a favorite for a few of the kids. They discovered the joy of hard work on the first trip. On the second trip they couldn't wait to get back in there and muck out some more. They ended up carrying out concrete along as well as wet belongings and insulation.

It was really nice to have some of my family along. Erik learned a lot about using tools and serving others.
One last trip on March 9th. We installed drywall for Sunday School rooms in a church. We also had a chance to visit the beach in the daylight before heading home.
A thank you letter from a Coney Island Resident.
A “Thank You Note – to my GUARDIAN ANGELS”
In as much of dealing with everyday of life’s stressors – once in a while we stumble upon genuinely nice individuals who do good deeds without a second thought of reciprocation or personal benefit. Thus comes “Poured-Out.org, with Steve Adams, Simone Simpson, and Doug Bowman, along with 12 Young-Angel-students. Please relay my Ever-Grateful Thanks to the lovely students – I will Vouch for their kindness to any school or employment Recommendation.
My family’s home was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy on Monday October 29th, 2012. I lost my car, and entire contents of the basement and first floor of my primary home. My children are still in shock of the horror we observed first hand by not evacuating our residence.
By week 5 – I was at my wit’s end trying to arrange for recovery for my family’s home. I’ve contacted more than 15 contractors and HVAC specialist to attempt to schedule a restoration to my home and heat for my children. After my son had to be seen in the Emergency room for Asthma symptoms resulting from the smell of Mold – I had to take matters into my own hands and try to work in the house by myself. Being a Teacher and Educator, I am not very handy – but I had to make every attempt to secure my children a safe and warm house.
When my multiple attempts for Contractors that do not show – God sends me the “Poured-out.org” Angels right to my front door, asking if I needed assistance. I agreed to any and all assistance to ensure further suffering through Mold, and cold house. Mr. Steve Adams, Ms. Simone Simpson, and Mr. Doug Bowman – My apologies for Not retaining all the names of the 12 Angels that assisted with the work. (I later discover from Web-page that is Mr. Steve Adams is a very humble Senior Pastor – whose philosophy I will follow – “lives out and believes Jesus calls his followers to give out hope and love by doing practical things”. Also met Ms. Simone Simpson who re-assured me – even while I showed doubt during her presence that “this is too good to be true” – she comforted the family and arranged for same day assistance (Bless You). Mr. Doug Bowman – arrived as a confident expert with 12 Angels / students – including 2 youngsters that called him “Daddy” that assisted him in the laborious work.
No Words of Thanks seem appropriate for their volunteer work – Except the True meaning in every essence of the term “GOD BLESS YOU”. I say this – not as careless as the term is used now – but truly – I prayed that God Bless the lives and tasks of these wonderful, helpful, Angels – which God sent to my door-steps in my most time of need.
Again, Thank you Poured-Out.org, with Steve, Simone, and Doug – with your students for your caring and gentleness – I pray you all have a guardian angel as nice as you are – looking out for you in your time of need throughout your lives.
Gratefully Yours,
Ayman Mekhail, and Family
