Greenway Sojourn - June 21 - 26, 2015
Cumberland, Md. to Coraopolis, Pa
Great Allegheny Passage - Sheepskin Trail - Montour Trail
Erik and I volunteered on the Sojourn this year in order to spend some time together enjoying the trail. It was a great week. We had wonderful weather most of the week. Rode in the rain one day but enjoyed glorious sun for the most part.
After helping get bikes on the the trucks, we bussed to Cumberland Maryland. Erik and I were the sweep riders from Cumberland to Rockwood. The first 25 miles were uphill In Frostburg we noticed Regina's bike locked to the fence at the water stop and she was not around. Bob found her wondering around town and we waited for her to rejoin the trail Upon leaving Frostburg, we met up with Carol who was experiencing severe leg cramping. She had been walking for some time. Erik rode ahead to refill water bottles and came back. We walked with her to the continental divide, then she was able to coast/ride to the water stop. |
Rockwood High School
As safety riders, we hung out in Confluence and Ohiopyle. Great salad at the Firefly Grill. Enjoyed visiting the new visitor center. It is very well done. Fixed a flat and a brake cable. No other issues.
Stayed in Dunbar off of the Sheepskin Trail. Swam in the little creek running by the park. It was very refreshing. Tuesday was the layover day. We rafted the Lower Yough at 5.1 feet. Sasquatch (Jordan) was our guide. I was very impressed! We ran the tail of the whale. Almost went in the hole behind the dragons tooth. Was glad we didn't. Had fun with Erik for the day, but I will stick with kayaking. Rafting is like riding a roller coaster in a fully loaded 18 wheeler. |
Wednesday - 30 miles. We were the sweep riders. Had some sherbert and ice cream in Adelaide. Sat with Todd and his wife at a little deck and playhouse where they serve food. It started as a lemonade stand for the rail trail.
West Newton
After arriving in West Newton, we headed into town to visit the local swimming pool. We played on the diving board for a little while. Fun!
Thursday - 50 miles. There were many detours on the Montour Trail. Trail volunteers were at key points. This was very helpful. Safety riders played leap frog to help at hot spots. Erik and I started near the front. The second half, we rode in the rain. At the Tandem Connection we had ice cream. The Black Lightning was amazing! Friday - 25 miles. The trail was suprisingly dry after all of the rain. Mostly down hill. Beautiful trail. As we entered town, traffic was fast and there was no shoulder. We arrived home around 8 pm after an uneventful ride in the Mann Van. |
